Finished with my Artwork! ... Evaluation

Yesterday, I realized that I had forgotten to finish my artwork which was supposed to be handed in today. Therefore I freaked out that I wouldn't be able to finish it during the lesson today, so I asked for a week's extension. However, actually, I was able to finish today!!

I feel I have been very effective in today's lesson, because I have been able to
- finish the henna drawing
- finish drawing the person with the traditional dress in the middle
- finish the drawing of trees
- Shaded the entire paper
- and done some final sketches

Evaluation

What was good?
I feel that I conveyed my culture into the drawing very well, by adding features that did not include any religious meaning, as I was supposed to draw shoes also, which would seem disrespectful. However, I didn't only include my Indian culture, but also my Norwegian culture, as I created both Norwegian type and Indian type mountains. The henna was great to symbolize my main culture as Indian, and it includes my name in Punjabi(the language that I speak). Also, the traditional dress symbolizes my culture, by showing the traditional clothing in it.

In addition, I feel that it is good how I managed to create atmospheric perspective by shading it darkest in the front, and creating lighter shadows as they go back. I have included gradiation as well, by creating it the darkest in front, to the left, and slowly shading it lighter as it goes along to the right. The shading is in my opinion successful. Also, linear perspective, by adding the light lamps. These may symbolize something which is in both countries.

The actual shoe I think is good, because it includes proper shading and contours. It was not very difficult to draw, as I used much of the same  shades as with the practice sheet from last time.

What could have been improved?
I may not have included as much about my Norwegian culture, as I did Indian, mostly because I feel that the Indian culture is more a part of me, even though I know that I live in Norway, and am surrounded their culture. Also, the shading of the shoe could have been more exaggerated as I had done with the previous drawing, but overall I think it looks good. The shading of the Himalaya mountains could have been done in a more proper way, as it looks like it is a bit rush (which is was).

Even though, overall I feel the drawing was successful, and I am happy that I was able to finish it on time on the due date. I worked very effectively, and hope to get good results.

Previous lesson, starting the assignment

During the last lesson, I finalized the design that I wanted for my drawing, which included shoes (of course), henna, some mountains that looked like typical Norwegian mountains, and some Himalayan mountains behind those, a person holding a flag and some more. I was able to start on my drawing as well, where I began drawing the outline of the shoe ( I decided only to draw one shoe) and slightly shade them in. This took the whole lesson, as I was very careful to do it properly. Even so, I think that the shoe may be too small, which means that I may have to do it again tomorrow. Anyways, we'll wait and see.

This picture is of the drawing mentioned in the previous posts, where I drew both of my shoes. In my opinion, the one to the right looks better than the one to the left, the reason being that I spent most time doing the right one. Still, they look pretty good overall, and is something I would like to include in my final drawing as well.

Starting the assignment

On Thursday, we began thinking about ideas for the assignment. the main purpose of this unit's assignment is to create a drawing which includes your shoes (with legs) and your culture. This drawing had to have atleast two different perspectives - one-point perspective, two-point perspective, atmospheric perspective and overlap.
In the beginning of the lesson, I became quite worried, because when drawing my culture and tradition in other artwork, I have always had a way of creating something that is connected to God, the reason being that most traditions and cultural things are connected to God in India. I can't create a drawing of my shoes on top of something "religious" as that would seem very disrespectful.

Even so, towards the end of the lesson, I managed to come up with ideas that, not only originated from my Indian culture, but also the Norwegian culture, seeing as I have lived in Norway my whole life.I don't have a picture of my ideas, but for my final design, I included mountains, henna, people on the mountains, and some more I can't remember. I also used atmospheric and linear perspective, as well as overlap.

Hope it goes well. Generally, I am pleased with the design.

Shaded my drawing

Today I managed to shade my drawing, by carefully observing the various different shades on my shoes. The Grey-scale (or shading scale) was helpful in doing this, as I could differentiate the different shades on my piece of paper as well. I used two methods to do the two shoes, where I felt that the first one was more successful. This included me just taking my time, and follow the details of my shoe from the top-right to the bottom left, and eventually filling in some shades here and there. I spent most of my time on my first one, which may be the reason for why it was a bit better.

The second method, our teacher suggested, which was to first find the light shade of my shoe, and applying this on the hole shoe. Then, we were to shade them in. As we had little time left, I rushed into it, and it not become that successful. Even so, I put my signature on, and generally it looked like an okay piece. Just glad that this wasn't our assignment.

Last lesson

The previous lesson, our teacher was absent most of the lesson, so he gave us an assignment we had to do, which was to draw our shoes. We started off my creating a gray-scale, by applying light grey on the bottom part and dark grey at the top. This took about 10-20 minutes.

This greyscale was created to help us shade our shoes that we were supposed to draw afterwards. I didn't manage to finish it, but in the end I feel that it looked good enough.

I wonder how I will continue with my drawing though, since the shoes will not stand the same as last year.
Even so, I am  excited about tomorrow. :)

New Year, New Term, New Unit

Happy New Year everyone!!

As we have now started a fresh, new year, it is time to start a new unit as well. This new unit is called "A Walk in My Shoes" and is all about drawing. We will learn about drawing specific objects, shading, contours, perspectives and depth, which will then be applied in our assignment - to draw a shoe and symbols that help to recognize a specific culture.

Observation will have to be a key factor to encounter, as drawing in general is quite difficult. Thinking about my last drawing projects, such as drawing Sharukh Khan (Icon I think) and the self-portrait unit from last term , I know that if I really set my mind to it, I can actually create something extraordinary.

For example, when I drew Sharukh Khan, I really focused on the hair. This was the result:

There is a major difference between this drawing, and the self-portrait, because I didn't really focus too much  on the actually drawing part, which may be the reason for why it was not as successful as I wanted it to be.

Well, we will see.. I hope to try my best!

Evaluation - Time

Here is an evalutation on my clock, where I will discuss the parts that are good and what improvements I can make next time.

This clock I have worked really hard on, and I am generally happy about the result - even after repairing the broken pieces... The cracks has changed from my initial idea of the artwork, from being slow - thinking about life, that there is still a lot of time left for us to live. That life is about loving, trusting and dreaming - to a bit faster pace where these cracks may signify thunder. Maybe that life as its upsides and downsides, and even though it is this way, we are still supposed to love, trust and dream to achieve our goals in life. This is actually the first time I have really been satisfied with my work!

What was good?
Firstly, I think that the idea is one of the best ideas I have made since I first started at MYP, It really shows who I am, and who I want to be, as I have always been into building my motivation for a better life. I think it was good that I only chose to paint three words, because if I had written one or two more, they would have been quite small. These words have an appropriate size.
Also, I like the way I have created space in front of the clock where I may want to put candles on when I bring it home. (Yes, I would like to bring it home.)
Finally, even though it is a shame that the it broke, I like the new, changed meaning of the clock and to exaggerate it a bit more, I have included darker purple on the left side and a bit lighter on the right side. It was actually not on purpose, but I still feel that it gave something a bit more to the clock.

What improvements can I make for next time?
NOT TO BREAK IT.
No.. just kidding.
I can now see on the picture that the words are slanted a little, so this is probably the first thing I would improve on. It also would be great if I could emphasize the cracks a little more, so that they really stand out. This was one of my goals last week, however because I had the whole artwork to paint, I didn't have time. In addition to this, I noticed that when we were to put the clock in on the back side, it just barely fitted and the needles almost got stuck on the surface of the front so they didn't move. We managed to fix this, but to avoid this problem in the future, I will make sure to leave enough space for the clock to fit perfectly fine.

Generally, I am pleased with my work and I feel proud to accomplish this, even after my inital idea was somewhat spoiled.
Loved this unit!!
